Research Communications and Outreach Assistant
IIHR—Hydroscience and Engineering (http://www.iihr.uiowa.edu/) is looking for a Student Communications and Outreach Assistant to provide general support to several research programs. Successful candidates must be a student at the University of Iowa, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to follow instructions and complete projects independently. A valid driver’s license is required and continued compliance with the standards of the University Driving Policy. (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
Under direct supervision, assist with communications and outreach activities in support of research programs. Activities include: assisting with facilitating educational STEM events and general outreach events; writing and editing research related publications, articles, news stories, etc.; maintaining websites; assisting with social media efforts; and writing web stories for IIHR, Iowa Flood Center, and other programs.
Work Schedule
The position is available immediately; Schedule is flexible, in-person 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (15-20 hours per week). Must be available to work some evening and weekend events. Possibility of appointment continuing depending on satisfactory performance and work needs.
Pay
$13.00 $15.00 per hour commensurate with qualifications and experience.
General Duties
Assist with planning and independently facilitating educational outreach efforts. This may include STEM events, hosting visitors, or classroom/summer camp visits.
Writing and editing publications, articles, news stories, etc.
Maintain IIHR and IFC websites
Assist with social media
Collect, update, and organize academic and media records
Qualifications
Must be a student at the University of Iowa.
Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
A valid driver’s license is required and continued compliance with the standards of the University Driving Policy. (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
Demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
Interest in or experience with educational programming for varied audiences including students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Must be highly organized and able to follow instructions and complete projects independently.
