The Iowa Flood Center Excellence in Research Award honors outstanding graduate students whose exceptional contributions are significantly advancing the mission of the Iowa Flood Center through innovative, high-impact research. This award recognizes highly deserving students for research that meaningfully addresses real-world challenges related to flooding, water resource management, and community resilience.

Award recipients exhibit excellence in scientific inquiry, creative problem-solving, effective communication, and a strong dedication to translating research from scientific discovery into practical applications that support flood preparedness, risk reduction, and public service across Iowa and beyond. The award is $4,000 annually.

Award Criteria

Eligible graduate students should:

  • Currently be enrolled as a graduate student affiliated with the Iowa Flood Center
  • Demonstrate excellence in research quality, originality, and relevance
  • Provide clear contributions to the goals of enhancing flood response, preparedness, and resilience
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration to support research to operations efforts
  • Contribute to the public service impacts of flood-related science
